What is mechanics of honing?
Generally speaking; honing is an abrasive machining process provides turning and reciprocating motion with abrasive stone to manufacture internal surface of hole. In which the abrasive stones are held pressure against the contact surfaces, according to the contact volume properly supplies cutting fluid to achieve a precision manufacturing.
Honing is using one or more abrasive stones assembled on main body; so called Mandrel, the stone is pushed by Wedge and produced reciprocating motion for manufacturing. A special texture of Cross Hatch will be formed on the finished surfaces. Because this cross hatch texture easily allows oil attached on, so lubricative surface provides good condition as two parts working together.
What is different of honing and lapping?
Main difference is that honing is operating under slow speed process to manufacture internal surfaces; however, lapping is working upon relative high speed. In lapping, the surface is hit by high speed abrasive stones; therefore the cutting surfaces suddenly generates high temperate which is resulted in a mechanical and physical transformation on the part. It may damage a bit of part surface as well as the inner strain may occur.
The purpose of honing:
Honing is able to provide brilliant final internal surface under very less cutting volume; generally honing can enhance precision in manufacturing process:
Measurement, Roundness, Cylindricity, Roughness, and Profile of a surface precision.
Stabilization of accurate process, stabilization of cutting force, less working time,
Good rigidity and durability, stable roughness, no scar, different material has relative process to deal with, various bindings improve abrasive stone durability.
